Merchandising strategies at the entrance to the store sets the tone for the rest of the visit. The last few steps before the shopper opens the front door, and the first few after the shopper lets go of the door handle are the moments when realization occurs. Retailers who are using this space effectively are attempting to manipulate the mind of the mind of the shopper.
People go to retail stores for two reasons: (1) to pick up a list of pre-determined items OR (2) to browse. An effective entrance strategy can bring a browser, or passer-by into the store, and it can also engrain a message into the mind of all visitors about what should be expected once they have entered the store.
The store entrance photos in the slide show below all depict retailer strategies being used to evoke a thought, or stir up an emotion.
